Machining and Finishing of Threaded Connection
Stable Services has installed only precision machining
capabilities, allowing the manufacture and repair of
all down-hole rotary drilling equipment. Stable Services
are licensed to API spec 7 and API spec 7-1.
Cold Working
Thread roots and stress relief features are cold
rolled. Cold rolling creates a compressive layer
that increases
fatigue life by minimising crack initiation.
Stress Relief Features
API boreback box decreases the likelihood of fatigue
failures. These features increase the connection
flexibility and reduce high stress concentration
that occurs adjacent
to the end of engaged threads.
Stable Services’ machine
park includes:
• Deep hole boring
• CNC hollow spindle lathes
• Manual hollow spindle lathes
• CNC milling machines
• Radial drills
• Grinding machines
All threads are machined using CNC machines. Taper,
threads and stress relief grooves are machined
in a single cycle. All API threads are cold
rolled
to improve fatigue resistance.
Phosphate
To prevent corrosion and galling and improve
the adhesion of the thread compound, all
connections are phosphatised.
Shot Peening
Shot peening is a cold-working process in
which a metal part is bombarded
by tiny balls of steel, cut-wire, glass
or ceramic shot. Although shot peening
is often confused with abrasive blasting,
the two processes have very different effects.
Abrasive blasting is used
primarily to rid metals of corrosion and
rust, while shot peening is used to work-harden
metal and to increase its fatigue strength.
Make-up and Break-out Services
Make-up and break-out services are provided
to improve rig economics,
by breaking in the rotary connection
prior to shipment to the rig site. |
